Show Students attend VICA conference Randy James, graduate, and Chris Oaks, junior at Uintah High School went to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the VICA National Leadership Conference and United States Skill Olympics, June 16-19, sponsored by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA). Randy and Chris were accompanied by Craig Mitchell as advisor. Craig is Uintah High School's VICA chairman and metal teacher. VICA is the national oranization for trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education students. Its members number almost 280.000 in local clubs in 51 states and territorial associations, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. At the Altanta meeting, delegates elect new national officers, plan their organization's program for the year and participate in the VICA U. S. Skill Olympics (USSO), a national-level competition in 36 occupational and leadership skill areas. Randy and Chris are two of 130 students representing Utah at the annual VICA national meeting. The Georgia World Congress Center was the site of most conference events. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Oaks, Chris will be 1981-82 VICA president. He represented Utah in sheet metal. The son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. James, Randy, represented Utah in heavy duty equipment. Randy was sponsored by Mack Truck. Conference activities conclude with a special awards ceremony. USSO winners receive gold, silver and bronze medallions as symbols of their achievement. They also receive awards-tools, equipment and scholarships-donated by the education, labor and management organizations which support the USSO. Leaders from organized labor, management, education and government govern-ment participate with student delegates in conference activities. |
