Show Uintah District Scout News CUB DAY CAMP A very successful outdoor experience was held in Vernal, July 1 with over 300 Cubs and leaders participating. The Cubs walked the monkey bridge, swung to the ground on a rope and then learned to tie knots. At the craft station each Cub made an Indian amulet and an airplane. They had airplane races and practiced flying loops and spins. The Vernal Community Swimming Pool was a cooling off spot for the boys. They learned the free style swimming method. The U.S. Forest Service provided a truck and fire fighting equipment. The Cubs were taught about fire safety, proper ways to take care of natural resources, and how to help other be careful in the outdoors. Bows and arrows were fun for each boy. They were taught safety with the bows and arrows, and then given a chance to hit the targets. BB guns were the hit of the day . All of the Cubs shot at the targets. Each learned safety with the BB gun. District staff for this year's event were Nila Richards, Cub chairman; Anita Nokes, Maeser Stake commissioner; com-missioner; Verona Rasmussen, Ashley Stake commissioner; Louise Card, Vernal Stake Commissioner; Craig Blunt, Webelos specialist and representing the district were Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hugie. Helping with the crafts were Louise John, Kathy Calder, Jan Burningham, Carole Massey and Adreana McDonald. Mc-Donald. The bridge was built by Norman Nor-man Nickleson and scouts from Troop 234. Swimming helpers were Glen Hunsaker, Lynn Winward, and Nathan Hatch. Forest Service representatives were Gene Kirk and Tom Contreas. Special help in the archery was given by Ruth Ann Merrell and Lloyd Richards. Paul Kay and Byron Richards were runners for each event. Laurel Cranney, R. N., was there for any emergency medical aid that might have been needed. Howard and Susan Weaver and Linda Davis helped sort craft projects. Several cubs break from their day's activities to get a bite. first annual Open Pinewood Derby will be held. This is a race for all Scouts and Dads. Weigh in time 11:30 a.m. Entry fee is $2 per car, enter all the cars you want. The cars must weigh in at 5 ounces or less and be no longer than 7 inches. They can have no extra moving parts (only 4 wheels). Trophies will be given to the winners of the races. PUSHMOBILE DERBY What is a pushmobile? It is a car built by a Cub and his parents or the Cub and his den. They come in all shapes and sizes and it takes two Cubs to operate one car. One boy is the pusher (motor) and the other is the driver. At halfway point the Cubs change places and continue the race. Categories for the race will be Cubs 8 & 9 and Webelos age 10. Enter as individuals, in-dividuals, packs or dens. Races will start at 11:30 at the Ashley Stake Center Parking lot on July 24th. Trophies will be given for the first, second and third place cars. PARADE Plan now to be part of Vernal's 24th of July parade. Families are invited to enter mini floats, wagons, or dress up and be part of the parade. Ribbons will be awarded in the family category. Uintah County Fairgrounds will be the meeting place July 24. All floats will be judged at 9 a.m. Judging will be 40 percent on overall appearance, 20 percent on theme, "Roots", 20 percent on originality, and 20 percent on animation. The parade route will start at the fairgrounds, go west on main street, to the Ashley Stake Center. Prizes will be given to the winning floats, $100 1st prize, $75 2nd prize, $50 3rd prize and $25 4th prize. The float should cost no more than $100 to build.
