Show UP&L asks for rate increase to offset coal costs Utah Power and Light Co.'s fuel bill is going up as a result of the settlement of the coal strike and Monday asked Utah Public Service Commission for an increase in rates to reflect those increased in-creased fuel costs. utility has aked for an increase in the account. Jn DeCembor the company asked fora reduction in rates and again in April the company reduced rates. In effect, the requested increase would put the account back to just slightly higher levels than before the two reductions. The company said that the current charge being collected under the balancing account is .379 mills per kilowatt hour and asked to increase that by 3.452 mills per kilowatt hour for a total recovery of 3,831 mills per kilowatt hour effective July 1 or as soon thereafter as the commission may order. In its application, the company requested an increase in rates of 3.452 mills per kilowatt hour in order to recover an estimated $8.3 million in added fuel costs July 1 through September Sep-tember 30. For the average customer without water or space heating service the increase would be approximately $1 80 per month. The Utah Public Service Commission, on a quarterly basis, reviews with Utah Power & Light cost estimates with respect to fuel and purchase power. Those items are considered separately from other costs of operation usually considered during a general rate case.
