ANSWER: A few rare types of cancer are inheritable. Most cancers are not. However, there is what is known as a "familial tendency" for some cancers to occur with greater frequency in some families than in the population at large. Familial tendencies ten-dencies have been found in leukemia and cancers of the breast, colon, stomach and lung. When any of these types of cancer occur in one member of a family, more frequent checkups are recommended for other members of the family. The "family" referred to here includes not only parents and children; but also uncles, aunts, cousins and grandchildren.
