Show 50 YEARS AGO July 9, 1931 The Fourth of July celebration at Vernal was started off with a daylight salute under the direction of Glenn Miller last Saturday. Satur-day. At 10 o'clock at the courthouse grounds a patriotic program was given, with Bishop J. Clive Davis as chairman. The program included community singing, "America", selections by U.H.S. orchestra under the direction of Lloyd Winn, a vocal solo "The Story of the Flag" was rendered by Alice Caldwell ; reading, "Michael Strogoff" Hallie Willis; coronet solo, Frank Postma, with orchestra accompaniment; accom-paniment; Hon. Robert G. Porter of Duchesne thrilled the audience with a patriotic address. He vividly pointed out conditions condi-tions existing in the world today and the social revolution which was gradually taking place. A selection was given by the orchestra. At the regular meeting of the Lions Club held Wednesday night presided presid-ed over by President R. C. Cooper, a report on the dinosaur museum was made by J. A. Cheney, past president. An estimate was made by the party of scientists who visited the quarry of the amount of rock to be removed in order to take out specimens and a visit was made to Green River gorge, to inspect its scenic attractions.
