Show Outsiders edge Freestfone 5tfo '.in fen innings Young's Paint has a 13-0 first place record in the Vernal Men's Softball League, but they haven't been given any breathing room by the second place Outsiders, who are only half a game . behind the Young crew at 13 wins and 1 loss. Young's Paint won three games last week, but the Outsiders also produced pro-duced three wins as they downed Wilkins Transportation June 30; toppled toppl-ed Valley Rookies and nipped Freestone Construction 5 to 4 in ten innings inn-ings July 1. Freestone Construction was tied for second place with the Outsiders at 10-1, but suffered three losses last week to Tosco, Young's, Outsiders and dropped to 10-4. Freestone Construction's first two batters committed outs, but Sherwin and Marty Mangum gained singles and Leon Roberts got on base on an error to , load up the bases. However, the runners run-ners died on the bases as Terrell Merkley grounded out for the third out. Dave Swett got on base on an error in the bottom of the first inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice fly by Donny Don-ny Paugh. Mike Cozart grounded out, but Lowell Aycock gained a double to score Swett and gave the Outsiders a 1-0 lead. Alan Beck flied out to end the inning. inn-ing. Both teams were blanked in the second se-cond inning, but Freestone Construction Construc-tion scored two runs in the top of the third inning to take a lead of 2 to 1. The first batter, Paul Pilcher, grounded out, but Herb Jensen darted around the bases for an inside the park homer, which tied up the game at 1-1. Cliff Harrison Har-rison was walked. Sherwin Mangum delivered a vicious shot to shortstop, Rob DeCol's head for a single. The ball smashed DeCol's glasses and popped him in the left eye. DeCol took himself out of the game, but he appeared to be all right as he could be heard yelling and cheering from the bench. Marty Mangum gained a sacrifice fly, which drove in Harrison and gave Freestone Construction a 2 to 1 lead. Roberts flied out to end the inning. The Outsiders wasted little time in regaining their lead as Dan Mortensen sTngled in the bottom of the th.rd inning scored on an inside the P hom by Paugh, which delivered a 3 to 2 iieaa to the Outsiders. Aycock gamed a single, but was forced out for the th.rd out. Don Monsen reached first base on an error and moved to second base on a fTe der's choice. Grant Kichens smashed smash-ed the softball for a double, which scored Monsen and tied up the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning. The Outsiders were blanked in the bottom of the fourth inning and Freestone Construction was shutout n the top of the fifth innmg, but the Outsiders Out-siders scored one run in he bottoir i of the fifth inning to take a lead of 4 to 3. Tony Wright singled and moved to second se-cond base. Swett flied out and Wright advanced to third base. Wright scored as Freestone Construction tried for a double play and only got Mortensen at second base. Paugh reached first base on a fielder's choice as the ball didn t arrive in time for a doubleplay. The third out was gained when Cozart flied out. It appeared that the game was going to end in the seventh inning as the first two Freestone batters committed outs in the top of the inning. Toby Gilroy grounded out, but Grant Richens gamed gam-ed a single. However, Richens was forced forc-ed out at second base and Pilcher just barely reached first base for a fielder's choice. Jensen singled, took a big lead off first. A pick off attempt was made. The throw was wide and the ball got by the first baseman. Pilcher scored with two outs for the final out. Outsiders went down one, two, three and the game was forced into extra innings. Marty Mangum flied out close to the fence for the second out in the top of the eighth inning and Roberts singled. Roberts was stranded as Merkley flied out. The first two Outsiders flied out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Paugh gained a single, but he remained at first base as Cozart flied out.
