Historian, artist team research Main Street Hsitorian in Residence, David Singer of Salt Lake City, will be in Vernal for 18 weeks researching the history of Vernal's Main Street. Singer's services are being provided by a $10,000 grant from the Utah Endowment En-dowment for the Humanities requested by the Uintah County Library with assistance from the Utah Historical Society. "We will look at the changes in the downtown business district from the time of its settlement to the present," Singer said. Artist David Ahrnsbrak is working closely with Singer to provide the graphic art for a project which will show which businesses were where at several different periods. "We applied for this grant because so many people inquired about where businesses used to be located," said Doris Burton, librarian. "With the expected growth, this is a good time to undertake such a project," Ultimately the project will "help make changes in the next years by looking at the past," Singer said. "It will also develop the County Library as the cultural center for the county. Most of Singer's and Ahrnsbrak 's research will be done by using old county documents, telephone books, and newspapers. Singer will report his findings on a quarterly basis and will make a final report to the Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Burton said. When complete, the project will be permanently located in the library for future reference. |
