Show !n The good Old Says 30 YEARS AGO OCTOBER 18, 1951 Fall lamb shipments from Vernal sheepmen have brought record prices on the early market. Repeating the unusual circumstance of last year, feeder lambs have again brought a higher price than fat lambs. Over 25,000 lambs have already left the Basin for Craig, Colo., with more to go as weather conditions improve. The lambs averaged 70 pounds and sold at an average of 321 2 cents, representing a 7 cent increase over last year's price of 25 cents. An extensive building program, including in-cluding 4 cottages, 3 duplex apartments, apart-ments, office, warehouse, garage and cafeteria are underway at the Red Wash oil field, 35 miles southwest of Vernal. Ash ton Bros, of Vernal have the contract con-tract for the erection of the buildings and will have completed the warehouse and cafeteria this week. The present heating facilities in the city and county jail are a menace to the safety and health of the prisoners, states Herbert M. Snyder, Uintah County Coun-ty Sheriff. A central heating plant, located in the basement of the building, would be a great improvement over present facilities. The interior and exterior walls of the jail show the scars of many escapes and attempted escapes. The building is heated by two coal stoves. 50YEARS AGO OCTOBER 15, 1931 Rich fossil beds lie only fifteen miles southeast of Price, it was disclosed Monday of last week, following a visit to this section by Dr. Chester Stock, curator of the Southwest Museum at Los Angeles, a member of the research association of the Carnegie institute, say News reports. In the last issue under caption "Large Type of Native Trout planted here," Eggs from these fish were taken from Pyramid Lake, Nevada, the parent fish averages from ten to forty pounds each, etc. Again in the Express I quote, "Milton Hacking, et al, brought the record size trout caught this season into town Monday. They were of an eastern brook variety, 21 inches long and weighed weigh-ed seven to eight pounds each, etc." "Much leeway in exaggeration is given fish stories and I want confirmation confirma-tion of some appearing in your paper. I know of no more conservative paper than yours. Plans are being made to construct a letter 'U' on the hill west of town under the direction of the student body. The following letter was received from A. Kendall, president of the Pacific Western Investment company of Hollywood, California, under date of September 29th. |
