Show Newspaper Week essay contest sponsored by Express Want to earn $1,150? All you have to do is write the winning essay in the "A Free Press Your Window to the World" contest. The Vernal Express is joining with the Utah Press Association and the National Newspaper Association to bring the contest to the readers of The Vernal Express as a feature of National Newspaper Week. Express readers will receive $50, $25 and $25 cash prizes as local winners. State winners will receive $100 and the national winners will receive $1,000, $300 and $200 for the winning essays. Last year's local winners were Robert Gilbert first place, John Evan Jones second place and Carolyn Goodrich Winn third place. Gilbert won second place in the state contest for 1980. The essay contest should tell in your own words, based on your own experience, ex-perience, why you believe that a "free press" is important to your freedom now and in the future. The contest is open to all except employees of The Vernal Express and their families. Entries shall be limited to 1,000 words and must be clearly written or typed. Entries cannot be returned. Judges decisions shall be final. Entries become the property of The Vernal Express and contestants agree that winning entries may be published with no extra compensation com-pensation other than prize money. National winners will be announced Feb. 27, 1982. Local winners will be announced Dec. 1 and state winners will be announced Feb. 15, 1982. Entries must be delivered or mailed to The Vernal Express, P. O. Box 1010, Vernal, Utah 84078 before the contest deadline on Nov. 5. |
