Show t i . . -.- j Carbon High School football players probably hope that they never hear the name Lance again. The Lance brothers, Mike and Joe, were really rough on the Carbon Dinos as they scored a total of three touchdowns. Mike Lance was the first Lance to acquire a touchdown as he nabbed a 25 yard aerial for a six-pointer early in the first quarter of a sophomore game between the Uintah Utes and the Carbon Dinos in Vernal Oct. 6. Lance's touchdown gave Uintah an early lead of 6-0, but Carbon scored two touchdowns to take a 14 to 6 lead. Uintah's Lance came to the rescue as he nabbed a 34 yard pass from running back, Kurt Robb, for a touchdown which cut Carbon's lead to two points at 14 to 12 early in the second quarter. Uintah went to the air once again as Ute quarterback, Lloyd Merkley, connected with Doug Bowen for a 57 yard touchdown pass and Robb scored a two-point conversion to give Uintah a 20-14 lead with 24 seconds left in the first half. Carbon scored a touchdown to tie up the game at 20-20. Uintah won the game when Robb dashed half a foot and into the end zone for a touchdown which was set up on a fumble by Carbon at the half foot line. Uintah gained a safety for a 28-20 win. The Carbon Dinos thought they had seen the last of a football player by the name of Lance with the conclusion of the sophomore game, but they were wrong as they had senior Joe Lance to contend with on the Uintah varsity team. Twice the Utes failed to score touch-downs touch-downs from the five and one yard line and the Utes were faced with a 3 down and 8 yards to go situation on the Carbon 47 yard line. Time was running out on the Utes as Carbon had a 3-0 lead due to a field goal in the third quarter. Carbon was ahead 3-0 late in the fourth quarter and the Utes needed a first down to keep their shot at a victory alive. The Utes got the first down and more as quarterback Pat Jenkins passed to Joe Lance for a 47 yard touchdown touch-down which proved to be the game winner as the Utes nipped Carbon 7 to 3. The Lance family will remember Carbon High School for many years as Joe and Mike Lance scored half of Uintah's points in games with Carbon Oct. 6 and 7. The Lance crew scored 18 of Uintah's 35 points. Uintah and Carbon fans were given their money's worth in the final 24 seconds of the first half in the sophomore game as two touchdowns and a two-point conversion were scored in strange and unusual ways. The Utes were behind 14 to 12 with 24 seconds remaining and they nabbed an 18-14 lead when Merkley hit Bowen for a 57 yard touchdown. The Utes gained the two-point conversion when Merkley . lateraled the ball to Robb. Uintah kicked the ball to Carbon, but it was an onside kick which was nabbed by Carbon. The Utes pushed Carbon back for huge losses on two quarterback sacks in a row, but the Dinos didn't get upset as Jason Allred turned Uintah defensive men's faces all red due to a 54 yard touchdown run during the final play of the game which tied the game at 20-20. Uintah hit the jackpot in the passing department this week as Mike Lance nabbed 25 and 34 yard aerials for touchdowns touch-downs and Bowen captured a 57 yard touchdown aerial. Joe Lance acquired a 47 yard touchdow n pass in the varsity game. Uintah traveled by air for five of its six touchdowns during the past week. The Ute defensive team turned in an outstanding game as they held Carbon to only three points in the varsity encounter en-counter after having given up 28 points to Timpview 21 to Pleasant Grove and 33 to American Fork. Carbon had the football on Uintah's three yard line in the third quarter, but three times the Utes turned back the Dinos on tries for six points. Woodruff was pushed back to the six, but a penalty against the Utes placed the Dinos on the four yard line. A big rush by the Utes forced the Carbon quarterback quar-terback to release the ball early and it was incomplete. The Uintah Utes staged another big rush as Woodruff was decked at the five yard line on a third down play. Carbon decided not to gamble on a fourth down try for a touchdown ns they went for a field goal. Woodruff's field goal attempt was good and Carbon had a 3-0 lead. Carbon gained three points, but the Ute defense stopped the Dinos from acquiring four more points and that proved to be the winning margin as Lance scored a touchdown and Jenkins connected on the extra point kick to give the l'tes a 7-3 win over the Carbon Dinos. |
