Show WOOD BURNING The arrival of the cool Autumn weather this time of year signifies the beginning of the wood burning season for many people. Depending on a number of factors, wood burning can prove to be a very efficient method of producing heat. However, each year tragic fires occur oc-cur from unsafe burning and result in both property proper-ty loss and personal injury, in-jury, according to David L. Santos, Uintah District, Utah Division of Forestry and Fire Control Forester. Wood burning in the home requires the following follow-ing precautions. 1. Have the local building inspector check the installation of all wood burning facilities. 2. All flammable objects ob-jects such as clothes or furniture must be placed far enough away from the heat source to prevent ignition. ig-nition. 3. No flammable materials such as gasoline, oil or grease should be in the same room as heating units. 4. Do not overload the heating unit with fuel. 5. Keep quality fire extinguishing ex-tinguishing facilities han-. dy and in working order. 6. Avoid burning green wood to reduce creosote build up and check chimneys regularly to remove such build up. 7. Never leave your fire unattended. Firewood is readily available throughout most of Uintah County. Remember to cut only dead and downed material for firewood. Permits for harvesting firewood on non private lands are available at your local State and Federal Forest Service offices. |
