Show BYU LOSES TO LAS VEGAS The University of Nevada-Las Vegas ended the nation's longest winning streak at 17 games when they nipped the Brigham Young University Cougars in Provo, 45 to 41, before 39,852. It was a 19 yard pass from Sammy King to split end Jim Sandusky which produced the win with 19 seconds left. "I knew I could beat their guy, cornerback Dave McKee. That's what I told Sammy when I came back to the huddle after the previous play. I had run a post pattern cutting from the right to the left. On the touchdown, I ran the same pattern except I faked a step toward the post, which McKee went for, and slanted to the right corner of the end zone," said Sandusky. BYU let a 41-24 lead disappear and watched a 5-0 season drop to 5-1. BYU fullback Waymon Hamilton scampered three yards around left end for his third score of the afternoon and a 41-24 lead with 5:46 left in the third quarter. BYU marched 79 yards on five plays in 73 seconds. Vegas' King connected with Sandusky on a pass and the receiver darted 55 yards to the one and fullback Mel Carver slammed over for the touchdown. Joey Phillips kicked the extra point, with cut BYU's lead to ten points at 41-31. The Cougars began a drive just a t the end of the third quarter which extended 55 yards and into the fourth quarter before a fourth down gamble at the Rebel 11 yard line that turned out to be a failure as Scott Young was sacked for a 3-yard 3-yard loss when a field goal would have given the Cougars a 44-31 lead. Nevada began driving for another touchdown with eight minutes left. The Rebels' King rifled a , 19 yard pass to Sandusky for a six-pointer with 6:47-left 6:47-left and Phillips' extra point cut the Cougars' lead to three points, 41-38. Vegas started on its, own 21. King, who amassed 473 yards passing on 31 of 57 attempts at-tempts and four interceptions, in-terceptions, threw to Jeff Spek for seven yards and to Andy Lazarus for five more. Again it was Spek for 11, then King to Spek for 10 to the BYU 46. Facing a third down and seven, King went to junior wide receiver Darral Hambrick to the left side for 24 yards to the 19. King was nearly sacked on the first down and then King hit Sandusky San-dusky on the next play for the game winning touchdown. |
