Its full name Is "Liberty Enlightening the World," and millions of lm-i migrants and visitors to this land have gazed up at It with a feeling feel-ing of hope and confidence. The statue of Liberty was designed de-signed by Frederic A. Bartholdi. It is the figure of owoman, wearing wear-ing a diadem on her head, and dressed In a flowing robe. She holds high in her right hand a blazing torch. In her left hand is a tablet on which is written the date of the Declaration of Independence. Inde-pendence. Probably no other statue in history his-tory has ben seen by so many people, or been such a perfect symbol of a great Ideal. The statue stat-ue was a gift to the peop'e of the United States from the French nation. It was given In commemoration of the 100th anniversary an-niversary of United States Independence. Inde-pendence. About 180 French cit-iej, cit-iej, 40 general councils, many societies, so-cieties, and thousands of French citizens contributed to the cost, which was about $150,000. Later, I about $350,000 was raised by subscription sub-scription In the United States for the granite pedestal. Construction of the statue was such a gigantic task, that although al-though it was started before 187! It wasn't unveiled and dedicated until 1886! The huge forearm was finished first and was brought over so It could be shown at the Centennial Exposition In 1876. Two years later, In 1878, the head was completed and was shown at the Paris Exposition, finally In 1885, the entire statue (except the arm already in the United States) was brought over on a French ship. It took 210 giant gi-ant packing cases to hold the 1 pieces. j The figure is composed of more I than 3(K) copper shells, each a fraction of an Inch thick. It Is 1 supported by an iron framework which was designed by Gustave Eiffel, who built the Eiffel tow- I er in Paris. I Join the CSU Summer Tour on j History's exciting trail. !
