Show Aviation Needs Speed Up Weather Bureau Reports Intensive development of aviation in the United States since the Lindbergh Lind-bergh flight, with consequent increased increas-ed demand for meterological data, has resulted in adoption by the Western West-ern Union Telegraph company of a new method of distributing Weather Bureau reports which is proving eminently em-inently satisfactory to Weather Bureau Bu-reau officials and to those vitally interested in-terested in obtaining weather information infor-mation promptly and accurately. Telegraphic weather reports now are concentrated at two points Chicago and New York for distribution distribu-tion to all parts of the country. These points are known as "duplicating centers." cen-ters." Chicago receives 440 reports daily and sends out 13,000, while New York receives 145 reports and sends out about 3,000. The work of duplication duplica-tion is highly organized, fifteen mimeograph machines being used in Chicago and eight in New York. Since it is known just what Weather Bureau stations must receive duplicate reports re-ports of the observations at other stations, sta-tions, mimeographed copies of reports are quickly delivered to the wires for transmission. The entire operation of receiving, duplicating, transmitting and delivering the thousands of reports re-ports is completed within 40 minutes. The individual messages report barometer at sea level, temperature at 8 o'clock maximum and mimimum temperatures during last 24 hours, rainfall, direction and pressure change in 12 hours. There are five forecast centers. Of these Washington receives 225 separate sepa-rate reports, Chicago 185, Denver 175, New Orleans 130, and San Francisco 170 in the morning and slightly fewer in the evening. Within an hour after these reports are received, the Forecaster's Fore-caster's prognostications for that particular par-ticular area is ready for distribution through press associations, individual newspapers, post offices, and other media, together with the well-known daily weather maps. |
