Burton, of Nephi, and George j Lunt, of Cedar City, failed of Republican Re-publican nomination for the offices of District Judge and District Attorney Attor-ney respectively last Monday, when I the Republicans of the Fifth Judicial District in convention assembled at the Odd Fellows hall in Milford chose Leroy H. Cox of St. George and A. L. j Larson, of Delta, for the two offices. i The first named two are the present I incumbents. I It took sixteen ballots to select the nominee for judge; the district attorney candidate was then chosen after three ballots were taken rapidly. rapid-ly. In the matter of choosing a judicial ju-dicial committee, each county named a representative, and the committee as chosen was Dennis Wood, of Juab County; John P. Fuller, Iron County; ! G. W. Carter, Beaver County; Albeit E. Miller, Washington County; and E. Clark Collister, Millard County. The meeting began at 2 o'clock, with Dennis Wood presiding. Secretary Secre-tary E. Stanley Tattersall read the convention call, and gave as the delegate apportionment, one delegate for each 100 votes cast for Hon. Reed Smoot at the last election. On this basis there were 74 delegates. Gubernatorial Candidate Speaks George Jefferson moved that committees com-mittees be chosen to act on credentials creden-tials and order of business. It was carried, the committees were chosen, and retired for deliberation. At this point, Senator Hirschi, of Hurricane, requested that E. W. Kelly, of Salt Lake, and prominent Republican candidate for governor, be presented. Mr. Kelley responded to the introduction introduc-tion with a very fine talk in which he stressed the importance of the judiciary branch of government and urged cohesion on the support of whoever was to be nominated that afternoon. af-ternoon. Method of Voting Changed The committee on credentials gave its report, allowing Juab 15 delegates, Millard 21, Beaver 9, Iron 14, and Washington 15. A half hour extra was allowed the committee on order of business and their report provoked some discussion and debate. The main point of disagreement was the recommendation of the committee that the voting be done not alphabetically but by lot. George Jefferson defended defend-ed this, saying that there was no particular reason why Braver county should vote first year after year; Hirschi and Miller of Washington County were opposed to the deviation, but it was carried on the convention floor. Five Nominees Nominations were begun for the office of judge. There were five nominees, nom-inees, named in rousing speeches by Baker, of Juab County, Collister of Millard County, Miller of Washington C, -. ::ty, Farnswortli of Beaver County, Coun-ty, and Steele of Millard County. They placed the names of Hon. T. H. Burton, W. E. Higirins, Leroy H. Cox, O. A. Murdoch, and A. L. Larson in the field. Balloting was begun; thirty-eight votes were necessary to elect. The first roll call gave Burton 20, Cox 24, Larson 15, Higgins 10, and Murdock 4. Juab and Washington cast all their votes for Burton and Cox all through the convention. The votes of Beaver County and Millard County were the ones that settled the issue. Iron voted scattered, but upon the most auspicious moment threw her full force of fourteen voles to Cox. Higgins, of Millard, Mil-lard, Lunt of Iron, and Larson of Delta, were nominated. The first vote gave Larson 31, Lunt 29, and Higgins 10. Washington threw her full support sup-port back to Iron county, Juab voted for Larson; Beaver for Larson in the Milford section and Higgins in the Beaver bunch; and Millard was split. The second vote gave Larson all of Beaver County's votes, and on the j third try, Millard united her warring ' factions from Fillmore and Delta and put their man over. The selection of the Judicial Committee Com-mittee took but a few minutes. The ; meeting adjourned, with its temporary tempor-ary officers having been elected permanently. |
