Show Union Wins 48-44 Thriller From Utes; Enters Region 5 Play-off This Week Phenomenal foul shooting; determination de-termination to beat their arch-rivals, plus oustanding performance by a smooth-working basketball team, tells briefly the story' of the conquering of the highly-rated Uintah Uin-tah Utes last Friday night by the Cougars from Union. Coach Glen Allred. had his kids up for this game, which meant more to most of the supporters of the Cougars than winning the state championship. From the' first whistle until the final buzzer, there was little doubt in the minds of more than a thousand people which jammed Union's gym, that the Utes were' due for an upset. The Cougars took a 6-2 lead in the first quarter on a field goal by Jackie Bailey and two foul pitches each by Clayton Huber and Lynn Hul- linger. However, the quarter ended 14-12 for Uintah when Valoy Eaton hit a field goal and Gary Lyman sank a beauty from outside just as the quarter ended. The Cougars really' went to work the second quarter and ran the score to 32-25 on some uncanny uncan-ny foui shooting by Huber, (8 for 8); Hullinger (4 for 4), and Bailey's (2 for 2); and some thrilling outside out-side shooting by Larry Ross and Gordon Bascom. They led 42-38 at the end of the third period. How ever, for a minute or two when Uintah tied the game up at 42-42, it looked a bit dark, but Clayton Huber came through with his only field goal of the night to break the tie and send the Cougars out front, 44-42. Eaton again tied the old ball game' up at 44-44, but not for long as Jackie Bailey hit his third field goal from outside, and a few seconds later was fouled by Jerry Cutshaw, and promptly sewed sew-ed up the game at 48-44 with a minute and 10 seconds to go. Union Un-ion then went into a control game that had the Utes completely baffled. Was Sweet Revenge The Cougar win Friday, in a measure, avenged the' humiliating 60-36 loss they sustained at the hands of the Utes at Vernal a month earlier. It also broke a tie for second place with Al.tamont, and give's them to right to enter the Region Five playoff in Emery County this week, and a chance for a state tourney spot. It's quite possible the Cougars might have made some kind of a record with their 96 foul shooting, shoot-ing, 22 out of 23. If it isn't a state record for the season, it most certainly cer-tainly is one for this region. Six times Huber stepped to the foul line with a 1 and 1 opportunity, and each time he' hit the first one and added the bonus shot to give him 12 for 12. The only foul shot missed was by Bailey early in the fourth period, but he redeemed himself when two points were needed with a minute and ten seconds sec-onds to go. Allred used only six men, and each of the sixtette came through in brilliant style. TheTe' is no doubt in anyone's mind but that Jackie Bailey played the most outstanding out-standing game in his life. He was high man on the floor with rebounds, re-bounds, getting 9, and scored 12 points. Lynn Hullinger, with 7 rebounds, re-bounds, and Gordon Bascom, All-red's All-red's two 6'2" boys used every inch of their height as they stopped stop-ped dozens of attempted layups and tip-ins by the Utes. Even though Eaton came through with a 24-point performance, perform-ance, Hullinger, Bascom and Bailey Bail-ey kept the' clever shooting star Final Team Standings W L Pet. The Utes are a potent ball club, and with Eaton, who is tied for top scoring honors in the state, leading the way, they should be hard to stop in the tournament which opens next week, March 14, at the BYU fieldhouse. Gary Lyman, Ly-man, Phil Bryson, Jerry Cutshaw and Wayne Pope are' all capable of playing championship ball. Their progress will be watched with interest in-terest from all the Basin. Duchesne Drops Tabby The Eagles of Duchesne High School shoved the Tigers from Tabiona further into the cellar position in the Uintah Basin division di-vision last Friday as they piled up a 57-33 win in the last season's game of 1956.
