Martha (Aunt Mat) Edwards Ed-wards being named Uintah Basin District Mother of 1956, a more complete analysis of Mrs. Edwards Ed-wards and her various activities is being published this week. Martha Jane Miles was born in Payson, Utah, in 1885, and married mar-ried Homer P. Edwards in Salt Lake in 1910. She was one of seven Miles girls. Four children were born to the Edwards. They are: Martha Jane, who married Elmo Nelson; Pearl, who married Clem Labrum; Rose Marie, married to Johnnie Cook; and William Homer, who married Donna Rose Boren. They suppJy Mrs. Edwards with her eleven grandchildren. All are' active in the LDS church and participate actively in community affairs. "Aunt Mat," by which she is widely known, has found time to serve her community and church in addition to rearing her family. She has belonged to civic organizations organ-izations as well as to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which she' has been an inspirational leader and held many responsible positions. Anyone delving into the history of the Uintah Basin and Roosevelt Roose-velt would find that Wm. Miles, her father; Homer P. Edwards, her husband'; and Martha Edwards, were' the founders of the first bank at Roosevelt in 1912, As Roosevelt's first lady from 1948 to 1952, when Homer Edwards served as mayor, "Aunt Mat" performed per-formed many gracious acts for the city and county, which are not recorded. She' is noted for remembering the service men, sending countless boxes of her famous home-made candy and letters let-ters to them so they could' better serve Uncle Sam. During her twenty-three years of teaching school and heT untiring untir-ing .years of work in the church, "Aunt Mat" has directed seventy plays for the' school, church and community. In addition to this she has worked as an accountant for McKinlay Motor, Studebaker Co. and Moon Lake Electric Association. Associa-tion. Roosevelt hasn't been "Aunt Mat's" only world, for she has become quite a traveler. She toured with her husband to Canada Can-ada and through Eastern United States into Mexico, taking in the New York World's Fair. Three years ago she took it upon herself her-self to take her three lively teenage teen-age grandsons to Cuba. When love blossomed for her granddaughter, MaReen Nelson, it was Grandmother Edwards who took her overseas to Verdun. France to be married to her LDS soldier boy, Richard Wright. Returning Re-turning home in the fall of 1955, "Aunt Mat" has been asked by community civic clubs to take them on the eleven-country tour through her experiences. To further realize Mrs. Edwards' Ed-wards' qualifications for the distinct dis-tinct honor which she has received, re-ceived, we' list her civic and church activities: ' CIVIC Chairman of the Women's Wo-men's Department of the UBIC for many years; president of the Roosevelt BPW Club; president of the AHrus Club;, president of the County Chapter of Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (monument at Duchesne for Escalente erected during this time); vice-president of the Utah Congress of Parent-Teachers Parent-Teachers Association; president of the University of Utah Alumni Association of Roosevelt; regional' committee chairman for polio. With the above qualifications and accomplishments to her credit, there is no doubt that Martha Edwards Ed-wards will have an excellent chance of being named the Utah Mother for 1956 when she competes com-petes with other candidates from the stafe in the' spring. In the event 'that this great honor is granted her, she will travel to New York to compete for American Amer-ican Mother of the year. Her many, many friends in the Basin wish her great success in this new venture and offer heartfelt heart-felt congratulations for the wonderful won-derful honor bestowed on her, of which she is so deserving. |
