Show Viking Students Swim, Pedal And Run To Beat Faculty By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL - Have you ever had the urge to swim 36 laps at the Bountiful pool, then get on a bike and travel some 15 miles only to dump the bicycle and run about six miles? WELL THAT'S what approximately approxi-mately 40 students and faculty members of both Viewmont and Woods Cross did last week as they all participated in the first Vieu-mont Vieu-mont swim team triathalon. To help raise money for the swimming program at the school the Vikings coach Casey Jackson decided to host this triathalon to see w hat kind of reaction he would get. "We were pleasantly surprised sur-prised about the way it was accepted. For the first time to hold the event I thought we had a great turnout. We planned it for a while so most of the athletes had a chance to workout for it." PATRICK DAUBAU was the first person to cross the finish line in the event as he clocked a time of 1:27.39 to finish almost seven minutes mi-nutes ahead of second place Troy Wenzel. The Viking swim coach Casey Jackson was the third contestant to cross the line only three minutes behind the second place finisher. Brian Bassett and Ken Nielsen rounded out the top five finishers. AS COULD be expected the event wasn't without casualties as four contestants failed to finish. James Cottrcll was in first place in the competition w hen he suffered a blown tire on his bike and was forced out of the race. Mike Oster-gaard Oster-gaard was in fourth place when he had an accident and fell out of the event. Rick Burton was in third when his blown tire on the bike forced him to quit and then in the girls competition Kia Fadel was among the leaders when an accident acci-dent sidelined her for the day. Nancy Roberts was the first girl to finish in the event and she did it in a fine time of L5S.32. ASSISTANT vice principal Paul Waite of Viewmont carried the hopes of the administration and he came through with a 12th place overall finish in the time of 1 :52.35. Thirty-two participants that started the event finished, four had to drop out who really didn't want to, and overall it was a great event. |
