Show County Molds On JDebris Masin $ or Deuel Creek By GARY R. BLODGETT Clipper News Editor CENTERVILLE - City officials were assured this week that construction of Deuel Creek debris basin will be completed com-pleted by Davis County - but not until after the spring peak runoff. DAVIS COUNTY Commission told council representatives representa-tives last week that the county will finish construction of the debris basin, but only after final engineering designs have been approved and the spring runoff is over. "Meanwhile, we want to observe the function of the basin as it is now and see what changes are needed before we complete the design and finish construction," Com. Harold Tippetts told Councilmen Lee Duncan and Bruce Erickson. HE SAID the county does not have the money to landscape land-scape and provide sprinkler systems for the perimeter of the basin, but urged the city to do this work. Councilman Duncan said the city is already going ahead with this proposal and a committee has been organized to work with residents of the area to landscape the site into a park or recreation area when not used as a debris basin during the spring peak runoff. THE COMMITTEE, headed by DeLoy Dye, will seek professional counseling about landscaping and will ask citizens to contribute labor and material to complete the project. Councilman Duncan emphasized that the perimeter of the debris basin will be landscapped and revegitated, but to what extent will depend largely on cooperation and volun-j volun-j teer service of the citizens. ! "THE (LANDSCAPPING) project probably will not be ' done in one year, but rather will be an ongoing community project," he said, j Com. Tippetts noted that since a final engineering plan is I needed before completion of the basin, there will be a ' public hearing prior to approval of the design, i COUNCILMAN Erickson said the design of the basin is working thus far and that some debris is being collected from the stream. "It's certainly better than giving the i runoff water a straight shot into the city without benefit of a collection basin," he said. J Com. Tippetts told the councilmen that "Centerville can expect a finished project as far as construction of the debris basin is concerned. I guarantee you that." |
