Show Viking Football Mentor Mark Pierce Resigns Ml' By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports $ BOUNTIFUL - After a two year stint as the j head football coach at Viewmont High, Mark : Pierce has resigned that position to accept the position of an assistant football coach at the University of Utah. , HIS RESIGNATION takes effect immediate-: immediate-: ly so that he can move up to the University and get involved with spring football. At Utah, Mark will be in charge of the outside line- backers. Mark came to Vie wmont two years ago from Bear River High where he had been head coach for two years. Prior to that post he had been a Part time assistant at Weber State for one year and a graduate assistant at the University of Utah for another year. COACH PIERCE is a California native who f j ; finished out his college playing days as a defen- s've back for Utah. ' During his stint at Viewmont, Coach Pierce guided the Vikes into a state playoff in his first .., season and then into the state quarter-finals ts this past season. In his first season the Viking team lost a playoff battle to Highland but this iCi Past season he coached the Vikes into the state fr arterfinals before they fell to the eventual tampions Brighton 17-14. AMONG his accomplishments was coaching Kurt Mathews, Doug Lee and Steve Caputo to All-State status this past season. The Vikes were second in Region Four this past season behind Davis. "I've enjoyed my tenure here at Viewmont but this opportunity doesn't happen many times. For my future career this is simply a good move for me at this time. I'll always remember re-member Viewmont and the opportunity given me to coach there" Pierce explained. ACCORDING to Viewmont principal Mr. Flakv., a substitute will be hired to finish out the school year and then a replacement as head football coach will be named. Mark Pierce was well liked and respected by his peers in the league and is a very knowledgeable knowledge-able football coach. Viewmont was fortunate to be able to have someone of his caliber coach them for the past two seasons. Some high school coaches have no desire to move onto the college level but Pierce is one of the few that has coaching on a college level as a goal. THE UNIVERSITY of Utah is getting a class coach in Mark Pierce. He has been very cooperative with the media and very honest. Viewmont is losing a good man to the college ranks but all they can do is wish him the best in his new position. -J |
