Show Winter Carnival gains sponsors by JANICE PERRY Record editor Park City's planned three-day Winter Carnival in February has gained $90,000 in media commitments com-mitments and in coming weeks promoters pro-moters will begin seeking local sponsors, spon-sors, officials say. A minimum of $30,000 in air time each has been pledged by KUTV Channel 2 and the affiliated Salt Lake City radio stations KALL-AM and KLCY-FM, said Park City Chamber of CommerceConvention & Visitors Bureau special promotions promo-tions director Jay Bundy. . The Chamber Bureau still is seeking seek-ing a primary corporate sponsor for the event, scheduled Feb. 7-9, but also will soon start asking local merchants mer-chants to participate, he said. The radio promotions will begin Jan. 1 and extend through Feb. 9, Bundy said, with a guaranteed 10 advertising spots and 10 mentions of the Park City Winter Carnival daily. a fireworks display that also will feature the Uncle Sam hot air balloon seen during the recent Autumn Aloft balloon festival. During the weekend, Bundy noted, Uncle Sam owner Jacques Soukup also will bring out a combination hot airgas balloon and lift off in a world-record attempt to fly from Park City to New England. The second night, Bundy said, the Chamber Bureau hopes to feature a concert night, with all local clubs booking name bands so visitors can have a wide selection of entertainment entertain-ment anywhere in town. In conjunction with concert night, he said, the ChamberBureau also wants to present a youth dance for high school and college students who are too young to get into the bars. "The point is, we have something going go-ing for everyone that evening," he said. The Coronation Ball is planned for the third night a traditional Park City black tie-and-blue jeans event. In addition, the stations will schedule interviews and do ad lib mentions of the event. KUTV, he said, will do 30-second, 20-second and 10-second advertisements adver-tisements of the event. All three stations sta-tions will provide extensive coverage of the events as they unfold and each has donated staff time to help coordinate the event. The carnival's schedule is largely laid out, but still is tentative, Bundy said. He added it consists of several main components a Royal Court, a Parade of Lights, concerts and a Cornation Ball. The Royal Court will include a king, a queen, a prime minister, a lady-in-waiting, a royal ski instructor, instruc-tor, a royal bartender, three wenches, a jester and three princes and princesses. All but the prime minister will be chosen during a contest con-test at the Egyptian Theatre, Bundy said. Don Gomes has volunteered to be the prime minister, Bundy said. While the royalty only has to appear and be seen, the prime minister has to do major coordination work, he said. The Parade of Lights, he said, will be held the first night, with up to 2,000 people with flashlights parading en masse into town. That, he said, will be followed by a torchlight tor-chlight parade down the ski mountain moun-tain by the Park City Ski Patrol and In addition to those events, a treasure hunt will be conducted daily, dai-ly, with clues given on local radio station KPCW as well as on KALL and KLCY in Salt Lake City, Bundy said. The object of the search? "A winter carnival medallion that can be exchanged for a $1,000 grand prize," Bundy said, noting it has not yet been decided whether the prize will be in goods or cash. The ChamberBureau also will commission local artists to create ice sculptures around town and there will be strolling players and madrigals. Also to be featured through the festival weekend will be a play now being written' by local playwrights David Fleischer and Mike Phillips in conjunction with Park Record theater critic Rick Brough, Bundy said. In addition to the major events, smaller activities will be held throughout the weekend, including a biathlon (using snowballs instead of rifles), hot air balloon ascensions, an all-area ski race, the beginning of the KPCW Airbands lip-sinc competition, com-petition, snow golf, broomball tournaments, tour-naments, ski fashion shows and skating demonstrations. Bundy said this will be the first of what he hopes will become an annual an-nual event that would be a major winter drawing card for Park City. |
