Show Lecture series to probe opera The story, spirit and myth of the opera "Carmen" will be explained in three introductory lectures to be given by Michigan State University Professor Herbert Josephs at Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University in Provo Oct. 2 at 7 p. m. , Oct. 3 at 7 p. m. and Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. All lectures will be free. Josephs believes few operas better illuminate the rich and complex relationship of literature and opera than Bizet's "Carmen." The opera, written in the early 19th century by Merimee, is a work that has contributed to a persistent image of Spain's gypsy culture. . Josephs will offer perspectives on questions of dramatic elements on the opera stage, a narrative point of view that disappears in adaptation and other issues of interpretation. . Josephs lectures nationally and internationally about opera and directs opera education programs for the Michigan Opera Company. He teaches French language and literature litera-ture at the Department of Romance and Classical Languages at Michigan State University. His lectures in Utah are made possible through a grant from the Utha Endowment for the Humanities and sponsorship from the Utah Opera Company, BYU and Utah State University.
