Show Parkites get mixed results in Sun Valley A-JI race series by Randy llanskat In two slalom and two giant slalom races held at Sun Valley last week the real stories were people such as Jeff Sarchett, Dan Stelma, Kristi Terzian and Sondra Van Ert, none of them Park City skiers. But Roxanne Toly and Tori Pillinger from Park City also had good results in Sun Valley, and there were a couple of bright glimmers provided by Scott Williams and Russ Shay. The Eric Hays Memorial, consisting of one slalom and one giant slalom (g.s.) race, was run in memory of a Park City ski racer who was killed in a car wreck. The annual event is normally held in Park City, but scheduling problems caused it to be moved to Sun Valley. Kristi Terzian, skiing for Rowmark Academy, won both the slalom and the g.s. for the women. But she didn't just win, she domina-. domina-. ted the field almost two I seconds in the g.s. and by over two-and-a-half seconds in the slalom. In the giant slalom Tori Pillinger took third. Stephanie Palmer from Park City, a JIH (ages 12-13) who went along on the Sun Valley trip to gain experience, experi-ence, turned in a fine sixth place result in the giant slalom. In the Eric Hays slalom no Park City women finished. Scott Williams had the best Park City finish in the Hays g.s. for men, taking third. But his time was over five-and-a-half seconds behind be-hind Jeff Sarchett of Sun Valley, the race winner. In the Eric Hays men's slalom, Shawn Hazelrigg turned in the best Park City performance with an eighth place. "The slalom races at Sun Valley were pretty much a disaster for the guys," A-JI coach Jim Clifford said Monday evening. "We just didn't have that element of luck." The combined winners of the Eric Hays Memorial were Sarchett and Terzian. The other slalomgiant slalom combination at Sun Valley was the Allan Patterson Patter-son Memorial. In those two races Dan Stelma of Sun Valley and Sondra Van Ert of Snowbird emerged as the combined champions. But it wasn't as if Tori Pillinger and Kristi Terzian didn't come close. Terzian won the giant slalom by over a second over Ven Ert. Park City's Roxanne Toly grabbed third, while Pillinger was seventh. Then in the slalom Terzian fell, opening the door for Pillinger, who went on to win by more than a second over Julie Tarlton of Row-mark. Row-mark. Toly was fourth in that race. For the Park City men Russ Shay and Jason Lawson did well in the Allan Patterson giant slalom, turning in fourth and sixth place finishes respectively. But in the slalom race Bret Johnson and Jere Calmes, two younger Park City racers taken to Sun Valley to gain experience, showed up the biggest racers by taking 18th and 23rd respectively. Clifford praised the performances perfor-mances of the "little guys" such as Johnson, Calmes, Jeremy Nobis, Scott Cartier, Greg Tesoro, and Tyler Tebbs. "I'm really proud of the way they performed," he said. "They gained a good deal of valuable experience from the trip." Scott Williams' third place result may help him gain a spot on the NorAm team which will be selected later this month, Clifford said. But most of the other Park City male A-JIs face an uphill battle, he said. Their last chance to prove their ability to the selection committee will be this weekend in two slaloms held at Solitude as part of the Snow Cup. For the women, Tori Pillinger is skiing well, but needs to gain on Terzian, Clifford said. He added that Roxanne Toly is improving markedly in the technical events. Both appear to have a good chance of being selected selec-ted to the NorAm technical team due to their performances perfor-mances this season. |
