On a clear day, you can ski forever, say 315 Town Racers by Randy II an skat j List the things you like to do on a Monday. Ah, there are many popu-,' popu-,' lar answers, but the winner has to be, "Skip work and go ski racing." Would 315 local people lie to you? So it was Monday, as the day belonged to the Town Race masses. The 315 participants racing and stretch-pant watching under the clear skies and balmy temperatures were the largest group to ever take part in the races held on Clementine at the Park City Ski Area. New names such as Holly Carlig and Dave Norris crept into the prize-winning slots, although some regulars like Jamie Kurlander Peters and Rip Griffith again mauled the competition. Town Race Czar Bill Skinner decided it was time he won his own race, while the Club team decided it was time to get its name in print, taking the third place position in the Pro team results. And Olympic gold medal winner Stein Eriksen ability, it was up to Dan McCann to take the top spot in the Bs. Norm Smith, a first year B racer, was heard to utter cries of, "Curses, foiled again" after being toppled by the tough B crew. Liza Resindez was a newcomer to the awards scene with her first place showing in the queen Bs. She knocked Annaka Johnson, the winner of the last Town Race, into second. Then in third came Holly Carlig. Skinner says the Vet women are finally becoming a tough bunch of bananas. He says some of the older racers are coming out of the woodwork to get back into the thick of racing. Patti Formichelli was a prime example that there must be a racing fountain of youth as she grabbed first. When the Vet men made their way to the starting wand they were faced with an unexpected level of competitionStein compe-titionStein Eriksen. The local legend lived up to his billing by mashing the competition to take first, unseating winner Dave Dur- - - Iff Hit? M't A ' ' Steve Evans looked good in the Pro Class, but he couldn't hold off Bill Skinner, Town Race Czar, who decided it was about time he won his own race. Town Race history was made this week when the Ski Service Center team won the Pro division using the times of two women and one man instead of one woman and two men. may not have found his competitors in the Vet bracket to be World Class, but they were good enough to S make sure Stein didn't lag on his way through the giant slalom course. Among the cross country breed, the results were a repeat of the Jan. 23 Town Race, almost. For the women Ginnylee Sprague threw the only monkey wrench into the game by taking third place, replacing Joan Skinner. Otherwise it was Lea Turner and Karri Hays continuing to monopolize the first two spots. j For the men, Rip Griffith, j Dee Wallace, and Carl Dollhausen finished 1-2-3 in j an exact carbon copy of the I Jan. 23 race. Among the C women, j Susan Ribas blew the socks I off the other racers with a j commanding win. That per- formance earned her a well-deserved bumping up into the Bs, said Czar Skinner at the awards presentation. ? Gayle Roetman finished sec-j sec-j ond while Cathy Stoy, racing only her second time ever, I. put in a good show in third place. John Rayle, who coinci-dentally coinci-dentally races along with 1 Susan Ribas for Philippe's, also raised some eyebrows by making a shambles of the men's C bracket. Rayle's time would have been good enough to win the B bracket if he had entered it. I But seeing as Rayle was I content to underestimate his ! ranee witn ease. The A women's division was a tale of a crash. Iris Gericke, who has won the last two Town Races, was cruising merrily to the bottom of the course when a snow viper upended her and sent her tumbling into the dividing fence at the end of the course. She was slightly mangled, but vowed to return to win back her crown next week. Skinner said Gericke is a true Town Race Horatio Alger. She started last season racing in the C class, and now is winning the As. This week Connie Brandner moved out of second to take over the top spot. Bender was his name, and racing was his game in the A men. There Mark Bender squeaked out a victory over Jeff Oak by one hundredth of a second. Jamie Kurlander Peters again made mincemeat out of the other Pro women. She outpaced Karri Hays by over two seconds. The winner of the Pro men took the first place spot by the Skinner of his teeth, so to speak. Yes, it was Czar Skinner who won his own race by a mere four hundredths hun-dredths over archrival Victor Roy. In third was Bob Davis, a former national pacesetter and baseball pitcher, who has now turned to local ski racing in hopes of appearing in a Lite Beer commercial. And the team tribulations continued. In the cross country domain it was the Zipp-a-Tones, a new musical clothing group, which zipped into the third place position. Then for the second week in a row it was Turner Competition Competi-tion Services, upsetting the Ski Service Center for first. The Eating Establishment is doing a consistent job in the Cs and Bs, nabbing second in both. Skinner says the E. E. is looking good in the overall standings once again. The question in the Vet ranks is who will try to land the free agent skier Stein Eriksen on their team. The Dynastar Marker team took first this week, but in weeks to come it may be the team which can meet Stein's contract prize taking home the marbles. The skis were blazing in the As, and the Blazing Saddles crew made the most of it with an unexpected victory over the Stein Eriksen Lodge. The RightfitSki Connection Con-nection team, last week's A winner, was rudely dethroned. de-throned. And finally in the Pro ranks, it was the team from the Club, spearheaded by the tandem of Louie Leatham and Mark Bender, which pulled the upset, coolly sliding into third place. The dogfight for first and second continued with the Ski Service Center beating out Adolph's this week. Town Race history was made here, according to Skinner, because be-cause the Ski Service Center had the times of two women in the top three places on the team. All other teams in the past have used two men and one woman to come up with the fastest combined time. There will be little training time before the next race for aspiring racers. The next Town Race is next Monday. |
