The courses may have been different, but the results were similar as Park City JIV (ages 10-11) racers Shannon Nobis and Danny Tebbs easily defeated the other skiers in their age groups. Nobis won her Saturday race with a time of 98.07, almost five seconds better than Ali Salomon (another Park City racer) at 102.96. Then on Sunday it was more of the same in the girls' JIV bracket. Nobis actually increased in-creased her margin in that race, bettering Salomon by over six seconds. Tebbs was equally impressive. im-pressive. These were the first slaloms of the season for the young racers, but Tebbs & co. showed no lack of experience. ex-perience. In his Saturday race Tebbs' time of 89.28 was light years ahead of first-year first-year JIV Jason Parkin (also Park City), who finished second at 96.97. Sunday Tebbs came in at 88.82, with Parkin at 93.52. "They (Nobis and Tebbs) are definitely the ones to beat in the JIVs, and their times are usually fast enough to either place or win the Jills," JIVJV Coach Dick Stoner proudly observed. observ-ed. In the Jills, another Park City standout held court. Marcia Griffiths won both her races against her 12-13-year-old competition. On Saturday she massacred her competition by more than seven seconds. Her time was 96.83, while second-place finisher Essie Doilney (Park City) had a time of 104.11. Sunday Griffiths had a closer contest, but still won comfortably. She won with a time of 93.56, while second place was held down by Ogden's Falesha Favero at 96.07. In the JVs (9 and under) Star Clark from Park City continued to ski well. That bracket is regularly divided up between Clark and Stacey Brown from Ogden Valley. They are very close competitively. com-petitively. On Saturday their times were only seven hun-dreths hun-dreths of a second apart. Brown won with a time of 111.02, while Clark came in at 111.09. On Sunday Brown fell, and Clark took the win. Stoner said that since the Park City racers are doing so well, it is important that good competition comes from within the team to spur on standouts such as Tebbs, Nobis, and Griffiths. He said that kind of competition is beginning to develop. Stoner said that running the races over the weekend was an easy task because of the extensive parental support. sup-port. Parents were helping out with gatekeeping and timing and other needed tasks. Stoner said that Park City has an advantage with the close proximity of the ski area to the town, and that makes it easier to run races at home. The JIIIs-JVs will head to Snow King at Jackson Hole Friday for three downhills. |
