Show Mock legislature designed to attract senior citizens by Emma Kuggles On June 12, 13 and 14 the Third Annual Session of the Utah Seniors Legislature will meet at the Utah State Capitol. A banquet with Governor Matheson is also scheduled at the University of Utah student union. In a simulated session of the Utah Legislature, the participants of the Seniors Legislature act as mock members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. They go through the procedures of sponsoring bills and resolutions that eventually could become laws. The purpose of the procedure is to encourage older citizens (55 or above) to run for public office. The Seniors Legislature has learned it is feasible to lobby, to approach legislators legisla-tors both in the House and the Senate. The Seniors Legislature is non-partisan. Senior citizens can become involved in the House of Representatives, the Senate, as a lobbyist or as an observer. Contact Glenn Johnson, 467-1713, or Utah Issues, 521-2048, 521-2048, if you would like to be seated in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. |
