Unless otherwise noted, events listed below will take place in Salt Lake City. MOVIES p -The Salt Lake City Library, -Ik. 209 East 500 South, concludes its Vjj! 1 Jungle Fever festival with "White jPjf 1 Witch Doctor." Susan Hayward fWfyA J brings modem medicine to the UissLimmmuum natives while her guide, Robert Mitchum, is out to abscond with their riches. It plays Friday. May 25, at 2 p.m. (for 25 cents) and 7 p.m. (for 50 cents). Cult favorites re-appear at the Blue Mouse, 260 East 100 South. The French farce "La Cage Aux Folles" is followed by the wacky March-December romance of "Harold and Maude" and John Sayles' low-budget college reunion film, "Return 'of the Secaucas Seven." (You might call it The Little Chill.) The Utah Media Center concludes its festivals for the month of May. The Hitchcock film "Strangers on a Train" is about two young men (Farley Granger and Robert Walker) who jokingly agree to "exchange" murders. However, one of them (Walker, in his best performance) isn't kidding! This is one of Hitch's best. It plays May 25 (9:30 p.m.), May 26 (2:30 and 7:30 p.m.) and May 27 (7:30 p.m.) The Eric Rohmer series concludes with "Pauline at the Beach," the story of two young women and their adventures with men at the family vacation house. It plays May 25 (7:30 p.m.) and May 26-27 (9:30 p.m.) The films are $2.25 each or $3 for the double feature. The Media Center is located at 20 South West Temple. MUSIC The Dynatones return to Park City, appearing at the Cowboy Bar, Friday, May 25, at 9 p.m. The Scottish traditional band Ossian will appear in Salt Lake as part of its national tour. The five-member group performs on everything from guitars to ancient harps and pipes. Ossian will appear Thursday, May 24, at the Art and Architecture Auditorium (Museum of Fine Arts) on the University of Utah campus. Tickets, at $5 each, are available at Acoustic Music, Cosmic Aeroplane, the Heather and Smokey's Records. The Kingston Trio plays at the Celebrity Showroom (formerly the Cherish) on Thursday (7 p.m. ) and Friday-Saturday (6 and 9 p.m.). The Showroom is at 139 East Temple. THEATRE A Andre Gregory's adaptation l of "Alice in Wonderland" plays Thursday through Saturday at the ir Babcock Theatre on the U. of U. I campus. It also plays May 28-31 V J and June 1-2, all at 8 p.m. A May "vxr 31 matinee is at 5 p.m. Caryl Churchill's "Cloud Nine" receives an extended run from the Salt Lake Acting Company, at 168 West Fifth North. The play runs May 25-26 and June 1-2 at 8 p.m. Harry Segal's "Heaven Can Wait,'" the popular story of Joe Pendleton, called to Heaven before his time, plays at the Little Bowery Theater of Promised Valley Playhouse, 132 South State. It plays May 25 and 26, then Thursday-Saturday through June 16 at 7 p.m. A June 16 matinee is at 2 p.m. Clap your hands if you believe in the Pioneer Memorial Theatre! Its season finale is "Peter Pan" with Max Robinson as Captain Hook and Tracey Williams as Peter. It I rwLJ plays at the Utah Media Center (20 West South Temple) on Sunday, May 27 at 2:30 p.m. Laserium, at the Hansen Planetarium, presents the music of Pink Floyd in "Dark Side of the Moon." It will be shown on Thursdays (8:30 p.m.) Friday-Saturday Friday-Saturday ( at 8 : 30, 9 : 45 and 1 1 p.m . ) General adm ission is $4, $3 for children and senior citizens. The Hansen also features the children's star show "Circus of the Stars and Planets," Saturday at ll a.m. "Close Encounters with John Williams" continues at the planetarium on Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. "A Comet Called Halley" also continues at the planetarium, 15 South State on weekdays (11 a.m., 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.) Saturdays (2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.) and Sundays (2 and 4:30 p.m.). As an added attraction, the world's best commercials, the 12th Annual Clio winners, follow the 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday shows and the 4:30 p.m. Saturday-Sunday shows. |
