Show 'Planned Famine' gives teens a taste of world hunger by Teri Gomes Any parent knows asking teenagers to go without a meal is asking for a major sacrifice. Imagine asking them to give up three meals in a row! You'd have some growling stomachs with scowling faces. Perhaps. But this weekend more than 30 teenagers will voluntarily go without three meals to better understand world hunger and raise funds to help stop it. While staggering figures participating in the program stay together during the Famine so that while we share the experience of feeling hungry, we can also learn why hunger exists in the world, and what we can do about it,." said Randy Thomson, youth leader. "We'll learn through movies and other materials the many factors which contribute to hunger lifestyles, life-styles, population, the energy en-ergy crisis, etc, and we'll discuss how we can be part of the long-range solution." By tonight more than 10,000 human beings around the world will have died this day from starvation or diseases related to malnutrition), malnutri-tion), the youth group at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church has chosen to do something positive about the situation. The "Planned Famine" will begin Friday evening for the group at St. Mary's Church and will end there on Saturday night. The teenagers teen-agers will go without food for 30 hours. "We will have the youth also raise money to help stop world hunger. They youth will each contribute $6 of his own money $2 for each meal missed to participate i in the program. In addition, j they will be seeking sponsors i in the community to contribute contri-bute as well. The funds will be channeled channel-ed through World Vision, an interdenominational Christian Christ-ian humanitarian agency currently supporting a number num-ber of hunger-related relief and development programs in Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. |
