Show Kimball Art Center aims for early June reopening "We are trying desperately desper-ately to be open by June 3, but to be honest I don't know if we will make it," said Kimball Art Center Director Diane Balaban. The art center temporarily closed its doors to the public on April 24 to repair the roof that had been damaged by excessive snow loads in January. At that time it was estimated the project would take approximately one month and a tentative reopening re-opening date was set for June 1. Since the roof repairs would necessitate barring the public from the premises for their own safety, the art center administration docid-ed docid-ed to undertake a major renovation of the building at the same time. According to Balaban, the roof repairs are now complete com-plete but there is still a great deal to be done on the renovation. re-novation. She said it is unlikely the entire project, which includes repainting the interior and exterior, will be finished by June 1. "The art center is so big that just repainting and recarpeting is a big job," said Balaban. When the construction is finished and the galleries are ready, the art center will open with a reception for artists Woodward Payne of Colorado and Kent Miles of Salt Lake City. Payne will be exhibiting oil and watercolor paintings in the Main Gallery and Miles will be exhibiting his photographs in the Little Gallery. "The artists have been wonderful about the delay and they have assured us they are standing by," said Balaban. The official grand opening will be celebrated with a It members' party at the i regulary scheduled board meeting on June 20. |
