Show by Rick Brough On the eve of big summer releases, movies are unexciting forest a vivarium. Along with Charlie, we make the crushing discovery that its outer boundaries are made out of concrete and metal, with a bubble-cover for a sky. The picture has a constant energy that fits the story (except perhaps for one sequence when the camera circles too much around Charlie, calling attention to itself). John Lone as the iceman is superb, and clearly the biggest reason for the picture's pic-ture's success. He shows ferocity, animal grace and a child-like consciousness of "gods" greater than him. On top of all that, he adds another layer the bewilderment bewilder-ment of a man out of time. He is aided by two good self-effacing portrayals of modern folk. Timothy Hutton is fine as Shepherd the bookish but shaggy anthropologist. anthro-pologist. (He's the butt of jokes because he seems to fit in more with wildlife than people). Lindsay Crouse is nicely controlled as a frosty scientist, more accustomed to subjects on the dissecting table. "Iceman" may seem a bit like"E.T." with its sympathy sym-pathy for the "alien," but it takes its own vigorous, thoughtful approach and makes it work. entertainment come in watching the killer's hands-still hands-still in heavy gloves try to manipulate the jigsaw pieces. To look presentable the picture uses familiar husband-wife acting team Christopher Chris-topher George and Lynda day George. He's a cop and she's an undercover policewoman. Paul Smith Bluto of "Pop-eye" "Pop-eye" is the most obvious suspect as a sinister handyman. handy-man. But viewers can easily guess the real killer. The police uncover him, after 5 killings, with a piece of information they could have tracked down in a day's time. Iceman "Iceman" is a fascinating story about humans making contact, though they're separated sepa-rated by thousands of years. A scientific expedition in the Arctic finds a block of ice with a perfectly-preserved Neanderthal man from 40,000 years ago indeed, not just preserved, but alive! While the other scientists prefer to study him as a specimen, anthropologist Sheperd (Timothy Hutton) establishes a tenuous relationship rela-tionship with the revived caveman, dubbed "Charlie" (John Lone). But it seems impossible for the Iceman to survive in this strange new time, either as specimen or human being. Shepherd's triumph, ultimately, is to give Charlie the freedom to solve the problem on his own terms. Director Fred Schepisi infuses the film with a breathtaking sense of discovery. discov-ery. First, of course, we see the scientists reviving the caveman. Then the picture shifts to Charlie waking up inside an artificial wood A Classic Recommended Good double feature 1 material 1 Time-killer For masochists I 0"'y J Finders Keepers "Finders Keepers" is a fairly boring comedy of mix-ups and misunderstandings. misunderstand-ings. But just for fun, see if you can follow this Rube Goldberg plot. First, a small-time promoter (Michael O'Keefe) accidentally comes into possession of a casket full of money. The loot has been ripped off from a millionaire (Arthur Hill) by his daughter (Pamela Stephenson) Steph-enson) and the thuggish chauffeur (Ed Lauter). O'Keefe boards a train, passes off the coffin as a military casket, and gives the "corpse" a G.L's name out of a newspaper article. Then, he enlists the aid of a crazy divorcee (Beverly D'Angelo) and a con man (Lou Gossett) who's been like a father to him. However, the senile train 1 conductor (David Wayne) re-routes the train to the Nebraska hometown of the corpse, who not only is not dead, but is a deserter, being hidden in his hometown by his uncle, the mayor (Brian Dennehy). O'Keefe and Gossett look 'L cute, but don't really get into .( their roles. D'Angelo tries with her character, who is I supposed to be funny be-L be-L cause she dresses like a bimbo and tends to call everyone a fagot. The movie has a few good jokes in passing, like the train-station lady who offers flowers to apathetic passen-! passen-! gers, "Have a chrysanthemum chrysanthe-mum ... okay, don't." David Wayne is funny as the world's oldest and most boring train conductor. And the picture almost picks up steam in the small town segment, filled with weird characters like the mayor's Ichabod Crane daughter. Alas, such details are not enough. Makin the Grade The "Trading Places" plot is a big element in this school comedy. Spoiled rich kid Palmer Woodrow (Dana 01-sen) 01-sen) needs a diploma, but doesn't want to go to school at the stifling preppy institution insti-tution Hoover Academy (or HA for short.) So he hires someone to go for him street kid Eddie Keaton (Judd Nelson) who's in arrears to a loan shark and needs to disappear. In one of the film's best scenes, a whole campusful of preppies freeze when Eddie shows up decked out with ghetto-blaster and a fire-red leisure suit. The film is uneven, yet the actors are appealing and several scenes are well-paced. The script is not bad, considering one of the writers, Gene Quintano, is best known as the actor-producer of the 3-D movie "Comin' At Ya." A typical joke dropped into the picture is the lecture on SAT tests, which consists entirely of: "In multiple-choice questions, ques-tions, the answer is almost never 'E.' " The small jokes are fun, but the script is garbled and choppy. Eddie is supposed to shake up the preppies, but on many occasions they act as crude and lewd as he does. Eddie is converted to a snob himself, though very short lived. His "preppy phase" lasts exactly two scenes! Judd Nelson, resembling a young Robert Wagner, looks more comfortable in an ascot than blue jeans. In fact, when Eddie begins to get boring, Palmer shows up again and hangs around the dorm for the rest of the picture. Dana Olsen's wacky performance carries the movie. "Makin' the Grade" ends up as an enjoyable C-f-. Pieces "Pieces" is a vile little Spanish flick about a mysterious myster-ious killer who dismembers girls (in graphic close-up) at a Boston college, drags selected pieces back to his freezer, and works on a jigsaw puzzle of a naked woman. The only trace of |
