Show Special Olympics Spring Games to be held May 25-26 in Provo I Approximately 1,500 athletes ath-letes from throughout the state will be in Provo to compete in track and field, volleyball, soccer, frisbee disk and wheelchair events, during the two-day Utah Special Olympics Spring Games, May 25-26. This state-level event follows training and competition competi-tion in local and area programs throughout Utah. The pageantry of the Spring Games begins Friday at 1 p.m. with the traditional parade of athletes, featuring each team attending the games and their Spring Games princess. i Athletic competition begins be-gins Friday at 2 p.m. and continues until 6 p.m. Coaches and athletes who are between events may take advantage of alternate activities including sports clinics, workshops, and games. Saturday's schedule will include athletic competition throughout the day, as well as a wide variety of alternate alter-nate activities including a spring carnival. The Special Olympics gives mentally retarded children and adults the chance to express courage, experience joy and participate par-ticipate in a sharing with their families, other Special Olympians and the community. com-munity. The Spring Games is one of three statewide events held annually by Utah Special Olympics. Winter Games are held in March in Park City and Indoor Games in December at the University Univer-sity of Utah. In addition to these statewide events, nine areas within the state sponsor spon-sor training and competition to prepare athletes to compete com-pete at the state-sponsored events. In addition to hundreds of volunteers who will be on hand at the Spring Games donating time and talents, the business community has offered financial support and in-kind services. The Utah State Prison Firefighters, "the Flame-In-Gos" are also a principal sponsor for the Spring Games and a year-round sponsor of Utah Special Olympics. Utah also has been selected select-ed to host the 1985 International Inter-national Winter Special Olympics Games. Over 750 athletes from throughout the world will be in Park City March 24-29 to compete in alpine and cross country events. The ice skating competition com-petition will be held at the Salt Palace Acord Arena. |
