THEL TRAIL Vail The Lift bus service in the Vail area has been discontinued discontin-ued because of low ridership and may not be revived. The service only averaged a dozen riders a day last month, yet requires nine-full-time employees to run it and costs about $16,000 a month. The system, funded by Eagle County and the towns of Vail and Avon, started in the mid-1970s. m But since then, said one observer, other bus services have developed to compete with the Lift. A public hearing will be held in early June in Avon to determine what public support exists for the Lift. The former town manager man-ager of Avon, Dick Blodgett, is suing the city for $2 million charging he was improperly fired. The controversy began last winter when the council, citing a lack of supervisory skills in police chief Bob Willcox, ordered Blodgett to demote the chief to assistant chief. When Blodgett stalled, the council dismissed him. In his suit, Blodgett said he was fired for merely expressing concerns over firing policy, was given no chance to defend his position, posi-tion, and was fired after council decisions illegally made in closed sessions. One councilman, Larry Kumpost, said Blodgett was implying he had more authority than the City Council. Meanwhile, the one-time focus of the argument, Bob Willcox, said he was leaving his assistant chief's job to pursue other opportunities. He said his wife's health was the main reason for leaving Avon. THE ASPEN TIMES Aspen The Aspen Times called the dispute Car Wars. The real fight is a court battle between a Hertz Rent-a-Car franchise, at the Pitkin County Airport, and the county commission. Hertz owner Reed Miller is saying the county has breached its lease agreement with him.- It is giving preferential treatment to other rental agencies at the airport, his suit says, since parking facilities are not fairly divided between the businesses. The county in turn has charged that Hertz failed its lease by not having satisfatory bookkeeping records. re-cords. Rumors have alleged that Utah Power & Light has been snooping around the area recently. General Manager Boyd Parker told the annual LVP&L that two-thirds of the members would have to consent to the takeover. And besides, he noted, Lower Valley charges 4 to 5 cents per kilowatt hour, while UP&L charges eight cents. "I see no advantage in (a buyout)," he said. Jackson Hole News Continental is the third airline to offer service at the Jackson airport, joining Frontier and Western in head-on competition this summer. Continental will offer flights to Idaho Falls and Denver, and will stress that its parent airline has connections to 60 cities.
