Show Conference to focus on women in western history The role of women in western history will be the focus of a four-day conference to be held in Park City in July. "The Women's West 1984," to be held July 11-14 at the YarrowHoliday Inn, is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by eight organizations including the Utah Women's History Association, the Institute for the American West and the Coalition for Western Women's History. During the conference, scholars will present new research on the theme of the West as a liberating force in women's lives. In addition, educators have been invited to present workshops on teaching western women's history. Two quarter hours of college credit are being offered for the conference by the University of Utah. Ann Chambers, funding chairwoman for Utah, said at least 200 people are expected for the conference. "Ten years ago Indian history was really in," she said. "Now, women's history is really in." The keynote address, "The Western Experience as a Liberating Force in Women's Lives," will be presented by Elizabeth Hampsten of the University of North Dakota. Chambers said the conference is geared specifically for teachers. "The people (faculty) we got are tops in their fields, in education, in folklore, in history," she said. Although the subject matter will focus on women, many of the participants in the conference will be men, Chambers said. She noted that there are a number of men involved in the Utah Women's History Association. |
