Show 'Cosmos' offers a journey through time and deep space "This is the time when humans have begun to sail the sea of space...," pronounces pro-nounces astronomer Carl Sagan at the start of his hour-long planetarium program, pro-gram, "Cosmos: The Voyage to the Stars," now playing at the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City. Sagan then accompanies the audience on a journey through time and space to show how man has moved quickly from "projecting our hopes and fears among the stars and constellations to visiting the planets and setting sail for the stars." "Cosmos: The Voyage to the Stars" will run through August as the Hansen Planetarium's featured star program. Show times are Monday Friday at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.; Saturday at 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $2.50 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children until 12. The Thursday evening show is half-price every week. Other program information is available avail-able at the Hansen Planetarium Planetar-ium at (801) 535-7007. The show begins by looking at earth's night sky constellations and the observation obser-vation that the figures and objects in the sky reflected the times in which man observed them. "If the constellations had been named in the Twentieth Century, I suppose we would see bicycles and refrigerators in the sky rock stars and perhaps even mushroom clouds," Sagan speculates. Astonishing imagery from the Viking mission to Mars and Voyager's explorations of Jupiter creates an exciting voyage for the planetarium visitor, who will find himself -n;nnrted to the planets during the show. The show ends with speculation about hypothetical planets orbiting stars in deep space. A joint production of Carl Sagan Productions, Inc. and the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, "Cosmos: The Voyage to the Stars" was made available to worldwide planetariums by the Atlantic Richfield Company. The Hansen Planetarium's presentation pre-sentation of this program includes additional artwork, photography, audio production, produc-tion, and special effects produced by the Hansen Planetarium staff. |
