Show Age difference scotches championship for Park City youth soccer teams I f ' . ... . .. : ' '- ' 0 ... ";. . . r a by Randy Hanskat For some people in sports age ooes not make a different dif-ferent Take Pete Rose or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, for instance. But for the members mem-bers of Park City's two youth socc er teams it can make all the difference in the world. On Saturday both the 11-12-year-o!ds and the 13-14-year-olds contested two brackets in the state soccer championships cham-pionships against competition com-petition that was one level older. The results were disappointing for the Parkites. Kathy Benne-, coach of the 13-14-year-old team, said Park City may have had to play the older teams because it entered the Salt Lake soccer soc-cer league late. But whatever the reason, the error of Park City being in the wrong brackets in the playoffs hurt. The older kids went down 10-0, while the younger group was trounced 6-1. Benner said both teams were intimidated by the older players, especially the 13-14-year-olds. She said they faced kids 15 and 16 years old from Clearfield, many of whom would play for high school teams if that area had high school soccer. The 11-12 year olds faced Salt Lake kids 13 and 14 years old. Ironically, it was the team the other Park City group should have been up against. Benner said the Park City kids were "good sports" about the losses. Both finished second in the state, but were champions in their area divisions. Saturday's games were the final contests before both teams head for Hawaii and California. The 13-14 year olds are leaving Saturday for Huntington Beach California and the Sun and Surf Tournament. Tour-nament. That tourney will conclude June 23, with the kids returning home on June 24. The 11-12 year olds are off to Hawaii and the Rainbow Invitational Tournament June 28. They will return July 7. One footnote: The 11-12-year-old team benefit drawing is nearing deadline. The last chance for buying a shot at two free trips to Hawaii is Friday.
