Sundance Summer Theatre opens with 'Pippin' ;;j On Friday, June 15 the Sundance Summer Theatre , rfopens its 15 th season with i ;i the successful Broadway : musical, "Pippin." ' 4 The musical is an adapta-; adapta-; ;;tion from Roger O. Hirson's ' novel of the same name, with .;the music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The long j.1 running Broadway hit was ' S directed by Bob Fosse and 9' starred Ben Vereen. Pippin is the story of a ;i young man's search for fulfillment. As the oldest son of Charlemagne and heir to the Holy Roman Empire, he tries love, war and politics before finally finding happiness happi-ness and security in the love of one woman and her small boy. The show offers an evening of dance, humor, magic and features the songs, "Magic to Do" and "Corner of the Sky." Jayne Luke, in her fourth season of directing and choreography for Sundance Summer Theatre has this to say about "Pippin": "I chose to direct "Pippin" "Pip-pin" this year because I wanted a fast, bright, funny show with lots of dancing. I wanted to do something with a different style than the westerns we have done in the past, but still fit in with the natural setting. This production produc-tion utilizes the theme of a traveling band of medieval players. They set up the stage using props and costumes that magically appear ap-pear from old theatre trunks. "The cast includes the most skillful dancers I have ever used at Sundance. The show is so clever and uses so many magical effects people may want to see it twice to figure out how we did it." The cast of characters includes Craig B. Call, in his seventh year at Sundance, playing the role of the Leading Player which was played by Ben Vereen on Broadway; University of Utah student Steven Gregan plays the role of Pippin; Peggy W hitbeck, a veteran of the Sundance theatre who played Millie in seven Brides for seven Brothers, returns to play Catherine; a well-known actress from Salt Lake City, Margaret Crowell has been cast in the role of Berthe; and Spencer Ashby in his second m year at Sundance and a semi-professional actor from Salt Lake City, plays the part of Charlemagne. "Pippin" will play nightly except Sundays until July 7, when "Fiddler on the Roof" opens. It will then alternate on even calendar nights with Fiddler. Reservations are required every night except Monday. Showtime is at 8:30 p.m. Dress warmly. |
