Show RABID DOG IN HAD BITES II 111 Al IS KILLED His arm badly torn by a rabid dog. W. H. Sweeten, deputy sheriff of Ma lad. Idaho, made a hurried trip to ; Sale Lake yesterday to consult with Dr. T. B. Beatty, secretary ol the state board of health, regarding a Pasteur treatment. He brought with him the head of the dog which had attacked him. It was sent immediately to Dr. L. L. Haines, state bacteriologist, who, after i thorough tests, declared it to give positive pos-itive indications of rabies. In the ' meantime Dr. Beatty had telegraphed , to Washington for a Pasteur treatment I and had addressed Mr. Sweeten's wounds to prevent additional infec- tion. Dr. Beatty said Mr. Sweeten's I prompt action in seeking treatment 1 makes It practically certain that the dreaded disease can be checked. Mr. Sweeten had been asked to kill the dog as It had been snapping at children attending a school just ovei the state line from Malad. in Boxex-1 tfr rftiinlv Mr G vv n c t r ilrnvi ...r- I to the school with a companion and found the dog. apparently perfectly normal, within a short distance of the buggy and approached the dog cautiously, cau-tiously, the animal making no sign of uneasiness. I Sweeten stooped over, reached for its collar. Like a flash the dog bared its fangs and leaped for his throat. He thrust out his arm and the dog's . teeth sank deeply in just below the elbow. el-bow. A struggle ensued in which Mr. Sweeten was bitten three times. He finally choked the dog Into submission i and then killed it with a small ham-j mer given him by his friend. The dog is said to have bitten at ' j least 20 other dogs. Several were ; caught and either muzzled or caged to 1 be watched for symptoms or rabies. Dr. Beatty said last night that of I five animals' heads submiUed to Dr. ; Dalnes all showed positive signs of ; rabies One is that of a dnp which bit ; a child at Cedar City, another is that I of a sheep sent in from Skull valley by William Moss of the Deseret Live; Stock company and said to have bit- 1 ten five men; a third is from a dog which bit two men in Lewiston; a! fourth, that of a rabid dog which bit a i child in Ogden, and a fifth one of a dog said to have bitten a man in Logan. Lo-gan. The two men from Lewiston were Percival Kent and a Mr. Clark. They were bitten eight days ago. but did not apply for treatment until yesterday'. yes-terday'. Dr. Beatty expects them at his office for examination. Several of the animals whose heads have given positive tests had bitten many other animals, and Dr. Beatty fears a rapid spread of the disease in their localities. He urges that every precaution be taken either to kill the animals or muzzle them carefully till all danger Is over. |
