Show mu 18 LOST ON NEVADA DESERT Fred Sharman of the Sharman Automobile Auto-mobile company has just returned after aft-er a fruitless automobile trip on the Nevada desert For forty hours Mr. Sharman piloted his automobllo about on tho wastes in a terrific rainstorm, trying to get across tho Deep Creek deseit Lack of gasolino forced his return to Salt Lake. Accompanying him were Happy Van Pelt and George and Oscar Smith. They were trying to roach tho ranch of Joseph W. Smith In Ruby valley near Wells, Nev. Tho party left Salt Lake at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning in Mr. Smith's new seven-passenger car. Mr. Sharman was at tho wheel and the other three, all youngsters, weie in the tonncau. The route tiken was through Tooele county and westward across the Deep Creek desert After tho party had gone aibout half tho distance on the way to Fish Springs, on tho western ibordor of tho desert, rain began to fall in torrents. Previously the roads had been oxel-lent oxel-lent and good timo was being niado. With tho heavy rain, however, tho sand was transformed Into a thick, sllcky mud. Tho wator was streaming over tho desert In rivers. In places tho wator was so deep that it was over the wheels of the machine. To add to the unpleasant situation night came on and tho party was in absolute darkness save for the lights of the machine. There wero no laud-marks laud-marks visible and nothing to guide the pilot of tho car toward hiB destination, destina-tion, Mr. Sharman put the sides on the automobile and tho youngsters of tho party went peacefully to sleep whilo tho pilot sought the way out oo |
