Show THE ST. BERNARD HOSPICE. Thore was probably a hospice upon the Great St Bernard more than a thousand years ago. But the Saracens Sara-cens came up from tho south of PYanco and made havoc In these parts and the hospice had to be refouuded by St. Bernard of Menthon in the eleventh century. According to Mr. Coolidge, it haB been served by the Austin Canons of Martlgnv, whose chief has just died after 25' years of command, perhaps ever since 1154, certainly since 1215. How many travelers trav-elers have the good canons and their dogB befriended during all these centuries? cen-turies? Formerly the canons had a good deal of property In England. The chapel of Romford was theirs in 1177 and Henry H gave them the hospital of Hornchurch or Havering in Essex.
