Show GENERAL STRIKE THREAP ROADS CHICAGO, Aus. 7. That the railroads rail-roads of the west are threatened with a general strike was indicated here tonight by statements of Julius Krutt-schnitt, Krutt-schnitt, vice president or the Union Pacifilc and Southern Pacific roads. According to his statements, unions have presented demands that would mean an additional burnen of ?o0,000,i 000 a year to tho western roads. Employes of the railroad shops, including in-cluding blacksmiths, car workers, Iron moulders, machinists and pattern makers, are said to have presented demands calling for a strict enforcement enforce-ment of the eight-hour day, employment employ-ment of union foremen exclusively, various changes in working conditions and more pay. It Is said thus far the roads have agreed, informing the men their demands de-mands would not be granted. "The railroads are paying top-notch wages now," said Mr. Kruttschnitt, "and the demands that have been made are unreasonable. I am merely guessing when I say the plans the unions have mapped out would mean an additional burden of -!50,000,000 a year to the roads, but it is certain the additional expense wouid be large." on |
