Show UTAH HOLDS THE SACK BY HER OWN CHOICE Smug complacency receives another jolt with the news that the accounts of the city treasury of Provo have been juggled at will for the past four years. This followed closely the first inkling of the word that Salt Lake City funds have been misappropriated. Prior to that, the state was the goat to the extent of a hundred thousand or so, which to date has never been located, and from all indications, indi-cations, never will be. As long as the people of Utah continue to depend upon a suicide or possible murder to keep them posted on their public finances, such things will happen. According toour state laws, which, albeit, are rather loosely enforced the publication of city audits is compulsory. However, the state legislature saw fit to shove bills into the background which were framed to put some teeth in these publication laws. Dalliance with many measures written only for the purpose of suppressing vital information aided in holding worthwhile measures back until too late for their passage. In pleading the cause of bill3 curtailing legal publication publica-tion of financial statements, their proponents had the effrontery ef-frontery to remind the legislative body that these bills had the support of associations of Utah officeholders. How much longer can these men, elevated temporarily to a position of trust by the will of their fellows, continue to leave a way open for the unscrupulous to enter the vaults of our public money and juggle the funds to their heart's content? |
