Show ' MILFORD ONCE HAD A REAL GOLD RUSH Coincident with the plans for a "Gold Rush Parade" here on the afternoon of April 19, old-timers are knitting their brows and recollecting a time back when Milford had an honest-to-goodness gold rush. It was back in 1904 or 1905, when a prospector dropped in- to Milford from the hills back of the mineral range, just this side of Cove Fort. Two wide- eyed acquaintances, he display- ed a beautiful gold nugget, about the size of a hen's egg. No time was lost by Milford men in chartering any kind of a rig available and hitting out for the location. Those who were unable to get away, stak- ed others for the big chance. Grocery clerks worked till past midnight putting up pro- visions. On horseback, in bug- gies and buckboards, about twenty-five parties hastened r to the hills. Nothing in the line of gold was found. The prospector .who had the nugget, stoutly 4 affirmed that he had picked it up off the surface, where it was lying among gravel peb- bles. No one knows for certain 4 where the real source of the nugget was. Had more been found, well, that's another story! |
