Show Parowan Little League ends with Mets on top PAROWAN - The Parowan Little League started the season the same way as it began-with a rained-out game. Both the first and last games were rained out and were cancelled. The play in the league did not stay the same however. The Mets started out tough and stayed tough, but the other three teams came on strong. Both the Reds and Cubs tripped up the Mets and the Braves came within 4 an inning of doing the same. The Reds started it off by whipping the Mets 6-1; as Joe Walunas scattered three singles and struck out 13. For the Reds, Doug Hermansen homered, Kep Prisbrey tripled and Danny tripled. Tim Beaumont tripled for the Braves. The Reds also beat the Braves, 19-6. Danny Adams led the way for the Reds with two homers, one triple, one double and one single; a perfect five for five. Doug Hermansen doubled and tripled, Joe Walunas tripled and had two doubles, Kep Prisbrey and Antone Stones doubled also. For the Braves Tim Beaumont again had the only extra base hit--a double. Doug Hermansen was the winner, Terry Horton the loser. The Braves, however, bounced back to really scare the Mets. They led 8-7 going into the final inning, but the Mets poured it on in the final inning to win 12-8. Todd Robinson and Scott liiornton doubled lor the Mets for the only extra base blows of the game. Scott Thornton was the winner and Tim Beaumont the loser. This past season was a great one for the little league in Parowan with many close and exciting games. The caliber of baseball really improved over the season and the coaches and players are to be commended for their fine efforts. Everyone involved in-volved had a great summer. Final standings are as follows: Bank of Iron County Mets 9-2 Mortensen Electric Cubs 6-5 Lions Club Reds 5-5 Parowan Const. Braves 2-10 Adams doubled off losing pitcher Scott Thornton. Two nights later the Cubs squeaked past the Mets 4-3. The Mets led early 3-2 as Mike Thornton kept the Cub bats in check. Only 'Brooke Bentley's first inning triple was hit very hard. Then, in the fifth, the Cubs tied the game and the drama was set for the sixth inning. In the top half of the sixth the Mets Russell Benson led off with a single. But the Cubs David Warren bore down striking out one Met and forcing the other two batters to ground out weakly back to the mound. In the bottom of the sixth, Brady Smith led off with a single. Mike Thornton then struck out the next batter but walked the next. Then, he struck out a pinch hitter. A wild pitch, however, allowed the winners to advance to second and third. With two out, Chris Robb hit one down the third base line that no one could get to and Brady Smith scored the winning run for the Cubs. The Cubs also whipped the Braves, 19-6.
