Team members are, Brian Johnson, Jeff Neilson, Kim Bess, Danny Stones, Pat Benson, Roger Bentley, Mike Evans, Daryl Jones, Greg Johnson and Richard Barton. Not pictured is Tom Haycock, manager is Russ Mortensen, standing right and coach is Terry Johnson, standing left. Big League battles to wire; tournament outlined Johnson from the Parowan team. Bradshaw Chevrolet placed Robert Piatt, Robert Shirts, and Ray Myers, while Cedar Products got the lion's share of the team with Kevin Schopp-marm, Schopp-marm, Brad Hunter, Howard Reynolds, Steve Stoker, Bill Engle and Rick Rollo. Morton Metal placed Steve Jenson, Robert Morris, Lee Holmes, and Steve Hafen. Winner of the sectional tournament tour-nament in Las Vegas will advance ad-vance to the regional playoffs in Phoenix. The Vegas tournament is a double elimination affair. Bradshaw Chevrolet 5-3 I Cedar Products 5-3 Morton Metal 4-3 Parowan 1-6 Going into the last week of Big League Action, Bradshaw Chevrolet and Cedar Proudcts are deadlocked for the league leadership. Winner of their Tuesday evening conflect will win the league. Most games last week were canceled by rain. Only one legitimate game was played and it was stopped after 4'2 innings when lightening struck a power pole on the park, knocking out lights on half the field. Morton Metal picked up an easy win over Bradshaw Chevrolet as Chevrolet only had 8 men there at game time. The game was played anyway, and Morton Metal won it 5-4. In that contest, Bob Piatt pitched for Bradshaw Chevrolet and aided his own cause by blasting a line shot into the National Park, but his teammates still fell short. Cedar Products edged into a tie with Bradshaw Chevrolet by virtue of a 5-1 victory over Parowan. Steve Stoker kept the bases relatively free of Parowan runners as he developed a fast ball to compliment his curve. Jeff Johnson pitched a good game for Parowan, but a few good rips by Products coupled with good base running and passed balls spelled defeat for the Parowan bunch. Tournament play for the Big League begins July 24 in Las Vegas. An interesting problem faced coaches as they began choosing a tournament team. Most tournament teams have 8 or 10 good players with the last few players being filled in, but the Big League faced another problem. At least 20 boys could play on almost any post season team, and onlyl5 could be chosen. Representing Cedar City will be Russ Mortenson and Jeff |
