Show Former director to conduct Shakespearn Festival seminar Michael Finlayson, for three years one of the most popular of the Utah Shakespearean Festival directors, will be special instructor in-structor for the Southern Utah State College Shakespearean Seminar which began July 14 and ending Aug. 8. Professor Finlayson directed "A Winter's Tale" for the USF in 1972, "Much Ado About Nothing" in 1973, and "Hamlet" in 1974. He is currently a member of the Theatre Arts Department of State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was born and educated in Scotland, graduating in classics. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and subsequently appeared ap-peared in that city in a number of plays at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre joined the New York University system in 1970. At Stony Brook he has directed "Ring Around the Moon," "Love's Labour's Lost," a musical version of "The Drunkard," "As You Like It," "After the Rain," "The Lady's Nor for Burning," and a number of other plays. Dr. David Lee, head of the SUSC English Department and coordinator of the Shakespearean Shakes-pearean Seminar, said that students may register for one hour credit for work taken with Prof. Finlayson. If additional ad-ditional credit is desired, students may work with Prof. Finlayson. If additional credit is desired, students may work with Dp. Lee in selecting projects which will offer one or two more hours of credit. Students may also audit the course. He describes the seminar as a flexible series of lectures and discussions primarily related to the three plays to be produced this season by the Utah Shakespearean Festival. A special guest lecturer will be Professor Louis Marder from the. University of Illinois and editor of the widely distributed Shakespeare Newsletter. "We'd' like this to be a .fun experience and we will do everything possible to meet the needs, expectations, and desires of the individual student," Dr. Lee Said. "It is a program we take pride in. I feel that it has a great potential to become an integral part of our summer program. It is open to everyone, he said. He directed his own repertory company for a year, producing a number of plays, including Shakespear's "As You Like It." After six years of service in the Royal Air Force he returned to repertory work with the J. Arthur Ar-thur Rank Company, the Oxford Playhouse, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, and the Glasgow Citizens. During this time he also taught at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the Rose Bruford School, and the summer school of drama at St. Andrew University in Scotland. Prof. Finlayson was assistant to the Boulting Brothers in their film "Journey Together" starring Edward G. Robinson, Rex Harrison, and Richard Attenborbugh. In 1956 he began a five year affiliation with the Brooke Theatre in Johhanesburg, South Africa, as artistic director. He came to America in 1968 to teach at Penn State University. He |
