Show United Postal Senice begins Utah operation For the first time in its 68-year history, United Parcel Service has been granted authority to provide coast-to-coast parcel delivery service. The Interstate Commerce Commission has authorized United Parcel Service to provide package pickup and delivery in all 48 contiguous states, subject to certain re-existing and relatively minor restrictions. Under the new grant of authority, UPS will be permitted to move packages between any address in Utah and any address in the remainder of the 48 states. The new service will commence com-mence on about July 21, said a company spokesman. Although a large number package delivery firms proviae such service throughout sections of the nation, United Parcel Service has become the primary alternative to the government's parcel post delivery system. "The new service will be uniquely useful to Utah residents," the spokesman said, "because the UPS system provides service directly to the premises of the user, whether packages are being picked up or delivered." He pointed out that this direct service is particularly valuable Continued on Page 2 UPS begins Utah operation Continued from Front Page in states where many citizens reside in remote areas, the more so since the rates charged are comparable to those for parcel post. "No dwelling or business is beyond the reach of UPS service," ser-vice," said the spokesman. "If a vehicle can be driven there, UPS will go there." He explained that the company offers prompt and dependable service. "Package transit times," said the spokesman, "will include second-day service to Denver and San Francisco, and third-day service to Dallas." United Parcel Service handles packages that weigh 50 pounds or less and have a combined length and ginh of lot) inches or less. It is limited to 100 pounds from one shipper to one consignee each day. The firm provides an automatic daily pickup service, and offers $100 of protection against loss or damage on each package without extra charge or paperwork. Other features of the service include an address correction service, a COD service and three attempts at delivery, after which the package is returned to the shipper without additional charge. United Parcel Service was founded in Seattle in 1907, and until the early 1950s it served primarily as a package delivery service for department stores and specialty shops in metropolitan areas. In the early 1950s the delivery company began expanding its service area. Since that time United Parcel Service has been engaged in a continual quest for authority from federal and state regulatory agencies to serve larger areas of the nation. This new grant of authority by the ICC puts UPS service into all 48 states, including five new states: Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Utah. In recent years the company has been serving parts of Idaho, Nevada and Arizona on a limited in- terstale basis. The new UPS operation will link these five states and the rest of the 48 states into a unified package delivery system. Twelve operating locations will be used to provide the new service throughout Utah. These facilities will be located in or near Blanding, Cedar City, Delta, Moab, Nephi, Ogden, Panguitch, Price, Provo, Richfield, Rich-field, Salt Lake City and Vernal. The company will commence operations with about 184 employees em-ployees in the state and some 116 vehicles. |
