Show Paragonah Dam raised The State Board of Water Resources last week committed com-mitted $50,000 to help pay for an estimated 1333,000 repair and enlargement of Red Creek Dam about eight miles east of Paragonah. The project, sponsored by Paragonah Canal Co., will seal the abutment near the toe of the west dam and increase storage in the reservoir by 600 acre-feet to a maximum of 1,360 acre-feet. acre-feet. The reservoir is formed by twin dams separated by a natural knoll. When the job was authorized a year ago, the cost was estimated at $284,500. Since that time, the price tag has ballooned because of inflation and a more accurate estimate of construction quantities as a result of detailed design. Most of the project financing will come from Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources -- $266,000 in return for a 300 acre-foot fish pool to help improve angling in Red Creek Reservoir about 30 miles northeast of Cedar City. Paragonah Canal Stockholders will get an additional 300 acre-feet of storage in their reservoir so more water will be available when it is desperately needed late in the irrigation season. Wildlife Resources' contribution is expected to finance all improvements except the cost of raising the dam to allow the 300 acre-feet acre-feet more of storage for the benefit of the canal company. com-pany. Paragonah Canal will make a $17,000 down payment on the job and will buy the Board's share of the project at a rate of $3,333 a year for about 15 years. |
