Cedar cheerleaders accorded honors The Cedar Junior High Cheerleaders this week came away with the "Award of Excellence" issued at a cheerleaders workshop attended by squads from Utah, Nevada and Colorado. The four sophomore girls also won the prestigious "Spirit Stick" and the megaphone award. The Cougar cheerleaders are Lori Green, Susan Nakken, Jodi Sawyers and Leslee Berrett. Miss Nakken also won the Miss Shouter-Outer award-the best all around cheerleder at the clinic. She will now advance to a competition with 220 girls nationwide which will be narrowed down to 14 girls who will be given scholarships and an opportunity to cheer in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama The Award of Excellence was given by the NCAA Cheerleading Staff who were judges. The local pepsters will also receive special recongition in in a national cheerleading magazine. The Megaphone Award is voted on by the girls themselves and signifies "the spirit and friendliness maintained main-tained throughout the week by the squad." The spirit stick is a traveling award, designed to be in the hands of the top group during the last day of competition, allowing them to take it to their respective schools. The girls also were awarded second place on their identification poster. Among the schools represented were Southern Utah schools, Las Vegas area schools and Olympus from Salt Lake City. |
