Show Simkins Wins Most Valuable Player Award in M-MenMeet When the North 33rd Ward M-Men M-Men basketball team won the All-LDS Church title in the final game of the big meet last Friday night in the University of Utah fieldhouse, it was the first time that that a team from the Salt Lake City area had accomplished the feat of winning two championships champ-ionships in a row. And very instrumental in the two wins for that ward was John Simkins, former Parowan man, who was judged the outstanding and most valuable player In this year's meet and also had a big part In winning last year's title for that ward. Simkins, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Simkins of Parowan had played with two Parowan High School teams in State Class B Tournaments back in the late 1950's. He helped Parowan to a third place finish in the state meet when he was a junior. In this year's M-Men tournament tourna-ment he won the most valuable valua-ble player award for his all-around all-around play, leading his team scoring most of the way. He hit for 24 points in the semi-final game and got 22 on the final night, besides being a big factor in his team controlling the bank boards with assistance of Paul Grant and Dave Hogan, team members. The Deseret News summed it up this way: "It was Simkins from outside, Hoggan with a hook, Simkins underneath, . . . with Grant and Simkins controlling control-ling the boards, and those who witnessed the final game on TV felt that John was earning the coveted award, and Paul James, sportscaster, was ready to give it too him before the final whistle sounded. |
