Show CSU Splits with Nevada Southern , The College of Southern Utah Thunderbirds opened the 1966 baseball season over the week end splitting a doubleheader with the Rebels of Nevada Southern at Las Vegas, Nev. The T-Birds dropped the opener by a 1 to 0 score but bounced back to take the second end of the doubleheader by a 3 to 1 score. Hank Halverson picked up the loss in the opener, giving up the single run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Halverson gave up a base on balls, the runner run-ner advanced to third on an error and came on to score the only run of the game on a wild pitch. Halverson collected the hit for the T-Birds in the opener as Bruce Behrman picked up the win. In the second game, the Rebels took a lead in the fifth on a double and single to go out in front 1 to 0, but CSU came back in the top of the seventh to push in three for the victory. Manuel Martinez picked up the win for CSU, coming on in relief of starter Larry Gittins in the 6th inning. Bill Lamb started the action for CSU with a walk, he came on to score on Bruce i Shaheen's single and Shaheen scored on a double by Marvin Day. Day took third on a wild pitch and came on to score on a wild pitch. The T-Birds collected six hits in the victory included two for three by Day, two for four by Reed Backus and singles by Shaheen and Roger Halladay. The Thunderbirds committed a single error in each of the two games. Coach Cleo Petty has a six man pitching staff available to call on. It includes veterans Hank Halver-sen, Halver-sen, Larry Gittins, Mike Erling and Sonny Sudbury. Added to the squad this year were Manuel Martinez, who picked up the T-Birds T-Birds first victory of the season and freshman Fred Esplin, a product pro-duct from Cedar City High School. Handling the catching chores is Bruce Shaheen with Reed Backus on first, Neil Petty on second; Rex Wright on third and Sudbury at shortstop. Starting in Las Vegas in the outfield were Bill Lamb in left, Bill Farr in center and Marvin Day in right. Roger Halladay, Steve Judd and Wes Roberts round out the squad. The Thunderbirds will be in ac- tion again this week as they tra-'vel tra-'vel to St. George to meet the Dixie Flyers in a double header.
